Disappearing Boundaries
“Instead of constructing spaces for the consumption and exchange of information and knowledge, one must now assume that exchange can take place anywhere. The new challenge is to carve program and meaning into a building by artfully restricting abilities, thus defining the nature of a given area. Because inhabitants are able to create so much of their own experience- as they can in cyberspace- the architect must give a space meaning by shaping how information acts within that space.”
No modern technology goes so far out of its way to construct systems that act as virtual analogues of the world as videogames do. With so much virtual space to fill, what is the role of the architect in this unique medium? This paper discusses the issue and goes on to talk about how and why the design principles that govern games are quickly becoming applicable in real world design.
